California’s Largest School Districts Struggle To Provide Summer Programs
According to a survey conducted by EdSource, tighter state education budgets are leading to declines in the number of summer learning programs available to low-income students. The loss of support and declining participation is a serious problem for parents, students and districts seeking to close the achievement gap.
EdSource contacted officials in the 30 largest California school districts to learn about the current enrollment levels of their summer learning programs, their plans for programs going forward, and whether the current budget climate was taking a toll.
The survey found that overall enrollment in summer learning programs was down, especially among low-income students, but that some districts have been able to maintain their enrollments and even expand despite budget concerns.
